As a follower of the teachings of Messiah Yeshua as well as a person who adheres to Elohim’s commandments as prescribed in Torah, there will be instances where any of us will come face to face with insult, defamation, denouncement, and even lies. The fact of the matter is that we as true disciples of Messiah need to know how to react when these circumstances arise.
As for me, I know that it’s quite hurtful when people say all sorts of wicked things that are so untrue. I admit that I am too human to react in the most appropriate manner that best reflects a biblical lifestyle. Still, I need to first remind myself, continue to practice these biblical principles and share with my fellow brothers and sisters the most scripturally correct way to react when these circumstances arise.
Whenever these difficult situations arise in our lives, the first thing that we really need to do is meditate in the Word. Anger may easily overwhelm us and make it difficult for us to concentrate. However, if we take a moment to turn to the Word during those difficult instances, the Bible leads us to a very beneficial manner in reacting where neither one of us can feel ashamed of those decision that we make.
So, let’s review four easy steps in how to respond to slander.
1) Act Unconvinced
The Bible allows for you not to trust them even if it is your own family members who are speaking all sorts of malicious things about you without just cause (reference Jeremiah 12:6). Yes, those who cause you harm will most likely approach you with favorable words. They may even break bread with you and seem like they’re siding with you just to gather more details about the situation to make matters worse. If anything, just know that the Bible allows for you to be on your guard, so it’s perfectly fine to act unconvinced with their bad report.
2) Meditate On The Word (reference Psalm 119:18-24).
The Scriptures are full of many wonderful promises for us to enjoy. It doesn’t take much to pick-up your Bible and the Strong’s Concordance of the Bible to read about how biblical figures coped with different life events and end up with a positive end result. Do not give in to your accusers' pressures! Instead, search the Scriptures and find examples that you can apply in your personal life. This will give you an adequate time to think before reacting hastily.
3) Do Not Criticize Them (reference James 4:11).
As difficult as this may be, I will be the first to tell you that no matter what they might say or do, if you simply stick with, “That’s your opinion! You have a right to think that. (smile) I just have a different view on the matter and do not think I have to explain it to you,” all it’s going to do is keep them busy in wondering what you’re thinking and not knowing what to do next. Do not submit to the pressures that they present and walk away. Besides, even if you were to share a biblical verse, a commandment or a biblical example, it’s only going to add fuel to the fire. Instead of giving them what you really think about the matter, remain silent and let Elohim’s Word rule in your heart. If you do respond, remember that “Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can break bones” (Proverbs 25:15).
4) Be Thankful, Remain Faithful, and Stay True (reference Psalm 15:1-5).
Allow time for the wicked actions of these malicious people to reflect on them, regardless of the gravity of the circumstances. Whether you’re present or absent, they’re going to continue onwards in the errors of their ways, and they themselves are going to realize that your presence actually brought them a blessing from the Heavenly Father - a sense of true, divine peace. At the end of the entire course of events, “[…] they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Messiah” (1 Peter 3:16c).
Instead, surround yourself with people who truly care about you as a person and do something that is fun! Alleviate yourself from all these unwanted stressors. Remember, you may talk about how you're feeling but not about the person.
So, whenever the adversary tries to ruin your testinomy, remember these five easy steps for you to enact in order for you to remain in proper standing with the rest of the international body of Messiah.
Act unconvinced about the report. Meditate on the Word and strategize the best approach in dealing with your current problem. Do not criticize the instigator. Surround yourself with true followers of the teachings of Messiah.
